Adobe Dumps Flex

Adobe has announced their intention to donate its Flex SDK, for building web applications, to the FOSS community. While the Open Spoon Foundation has been working on an open source fork of Flex, it is our suspicion that Adobe will donate the SDK to the more mature and capable Apache Software Foundation. Causing a furor among Flex developers, Adobe has announced that they believe HTML5 is a better technology for moving forward than the Flex platform. This of course has raised concerns that the Flex platform will recede into the classification of abandonware, as Adobe has a tendency to abrubtly terminate support for technologies that it deems a failure. So where is this going exactly? Is this a generous donation to the FOSS community? Or is it just Adobe dumping their abandonware? Hopefully the answer may be found largely in the former, as opposed to the latter.

Bing Destination Map: Automatic Napkin Sketching of Maps

Bing Destination Map: Automatic Napkin Sketching of Maps – information aesthetics.

This is a pretty good example of a couple of design principles that are close to our hearts:

1. Reduce clutter so that users focus on information they care about

2. Make it easy for users to find what they’re looking for.

3. Find any excuse to play with maps. :)

It’ll be interesting to see how google maps responds.

There are some terrific interface ideas here that have applications beyond magazine publishing. Our relationship with traditional printed content is so comfortable that we forget about the medium (book, magazine). The challenge is to get to the same point with electronic media – it seems that when we access content electronically we are always reminded that we’re using a piece of technology.

Anyway – the interface demoed here seems pretty natural to use.

The importance of Search Engine Optimization for government web sites

We came across this article regarding lessons learned by Australian government agencies following the recent bush fires. It seems that government web sites were not competing well with the private sector when it came to search engine optimization: web searches for bushfire information were more likely to return results from news web sites than results from government agencies. Given how important it is for the right message to be disseminated during emergencies, it seems that SEO is a key area for the Australian government to focus on.
